Metrology Laws

The Legal Metrology Act, 2009 ("LM Act") establishes uniform weights and measures and regulates trade and commerce in weights, measures and other goods which are sold or distributed by weight, measure or number.

The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 (PCR) is to regulate pre-packaged commodities. It prescribes the mandatory technical and legal requirements related to standards of weights and measures for goods which are sold or distributed in India.

Ministry of consumer affairs in the year 2017 approved an amendment to the PCR Rules which became effective from 1st of January 2018. The amendment was made for the welfare of the consumer.

The amendment made it mandatory for manufacturers of goods to make declaration about goods sold on the electronic platform. It also added 40 drugs and medical devices to mandatory mention M.R.P among other declaration regarding the packaging and consumption of the products. It is made mandatory that there must not be two different M.R.Ps on same product, other than in exceptional circumstances. The PCR amendment also made it mandatory to increase the font size on the packages to enable easy use of product so that it is easily visible.
